Didn’t plan or think about doing much Singapore photography and really missed having my usual Fuji 16mm wide angle. Singapore was more an afterthought and really only went there for a day and morning on the back from Bintan Island (which was great). Because most of my time was spent in Bintan, and I’ve done a lot of beach destinations, I took two new lenses, the Voigtlander 21mm Color Skopar F4 for my Leica MP, and the Fuji 55-200mm. For Bintan, they were fine, but for Singapore at night, they weren’t great, at least for shooting Marina Bay at night, which is what everybody does. I could have used the Voigtlander 21mm on my Fuji X-Pro 2 but didn’t bring my M Mount to X Mount adapter.
Anyway, there are about 55 million photos of Marina Bay on the web, none of which are that great, everybody shots it from the Esplanade Bridge. To get something decent you need a wide angle, ND Filters and make a long exposure. Even that’s been done thousands of times but at least it’ll look better than most.
There’s also millions of images of the Gardens by the Bay, those massive illuminated trees. Your Singapore photography will be to come up with something unique before you go and shoot them from a place or perspective, or a way that nobody else has. Basically with places like this you need to get away from the crowds because it’s a total tourist magnet, It’s also bloody hot, even at night, so take lots of water and a a running shirt because you’ll be covered in sweat by the time the night is done.
Lots of the Singapore photography tours take people to China Town but because I live in Hong Kong, China Towns anywhere in the world are never on my list of places to go to or photograph. The only reason I’d go is for a bit of Asian food. Apparently China Town in Singapore is decent, so I guess if you’re around the area it’s worth popping in to check it out.
If you shoot film, Singapore has quite a few film camera shops. There’s one place in particular worth checking out if you’re wanting to buy film cameras in Singapore – you can read more about that in this post on Film Camera Shops in Singapore.
