Silom Serene Hotel

Musky and damp, don't think I'd stay here again, but okay if you're not that fussy. Good location and nearby all the action, restaurants and shopping.

Stayed three nights at Silom Serene Hotel during a quick trip to Bangkok after staying one night at At Residence Suvarnabhumi.  Silom Serene Hotel is located on Silom Soi 3, which is an ideal location to stay, close to the BTS (about 5 minutes walk), MRT (Underground), plenty of shopping, restaurants and basically convenient for most things worthwhile doing in Bangkok.

Firstly the negatives about Silom Serene Hotel.  Checked in, took about 10 minutes, got up to the room and opened the door to find it hadn’t been cleaned from the previous guest.  They had given us the wrong room.  Stormed back downstairs to the lobby to prepare for my tantrum but before I could open my mouth they apologised profusely and ran around getting me a new key. They also upgraded us to a business room, which is basically bigger.

Probably the worst thing about the room in Silom Serene Hotel was the dampness.  Even with the air conditioning on, you wake up and floor is literally wet and the towels not dry.  Tried leaving the air conditioning off for the night and that wasn’t much better.  For me, living in Hong Kong, where for about 9 months of the year you live in 90% humidity, I don’t want to come to Bangkok and get more of that, especially inside the room.  Probably not a huge deal for most people, but personally I’d rather stay at one of the any AirBnB’s nearby (literally a minute down the street in Klass Kondo)

Staff at Silom Serene Hotel are nice, friendly, a couple of them didn’t speak great English but no worries, you’ll get by. Room we were in was large, getting a bit old but okay.  Bathroom as the same, but the shower had half a door, which was a bit weird.  Bathroom didn’t flood but you need to watch kids getting out as the floor can get slippery.

There’s a 7-Eleven 30 seconds away and a much bigger one about 1 minute away on Silom Road.  Walk towards the sky train about 200m further and Subway serve up a very good bacon, egg and cheese sandwich.  If you want something more fancy there’s loads of cafes around as well as a cheap market about 1 minute away as well as a restaurant in Silom Serene Hotel which looked like it had really good steak. Overall, for the price, it’s a good deal, about THB1,200 a night plus taxes.  I wouldn’t be rushing back here but at the same time I’d have no problem staying there. I had some washing to do so spent an extra THB1,200 on that, making the overall price about the same as most AirBnB’s just down the road. These are bigger and have washing machines so that’s probably the only reason why I say I would prefer them.

Silom Serene Hotel is showing it’s age a bit and could do with a renovation but it’s fine for a few nights and unless you’re a bit stuck up and will only be happy at the Waldorf Astoria, this is totally fine and a good cheap option for staying in Bangkok amongst the thick of things.  Check out Silom Serene’s Facebook page here.  Didn’t eat here during the stay but have eaten breakfast at the adjoining cafe/restaurant and the breakfast was a bit rank to be honest.  Steak looks good but there’s so many places to eat around that area it’s hard to justify paying double at the hotel.
