Fiji is a little bit like the Maldives in that when you go there, any review is going to be mainly about the hotel as there’s not much to do with the exception of visiting some islands. There are other things to do but the vast majority of people going there, especially with kids (and that’s what this site focuses on) are going to end up staying mostly at their hotel. Unfortunately we picked the wrong hotel, the Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort & Spa is over crowded, miles away from anything and well, is the main reason we won’t be going back to Fiji again.
There’s better, cheaper resorts in Asia with better beaches and overall it was a disappointing stay. We still had a good time there, but if you’re thinking about going to Fiji from anywhere other than New Zealand or Australia, I’d give it a miss and head to one of Asia’s hundreds of beaches. Fiji is renowned for it’s friendly people and whilst there were some lovely locals, there was also some pretty ordinary hospitality and below average service.
The beach at the Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort & Spa was also not great, perfectly fine for swimming, but not the white sandy beaches you’ll find in the photos. To be fair most photos of any destination are of places are taken at perfect time and made to look good, but our visit was so far away from what I had expected, it was night and day.
Anyway if you’ve already booked a trip to Fiji and want to find out some things to do in Fiji, either with kids, or without kids, you can take a look here. Of course, most of these things were at the Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort & Spa but there’s a couple of things outside the hotel worth doing.
