I don’t know what it is about Singapore, when you look at what there is to do here, the food, the shopping, the activities and the suitability for kids, it looks rather appealing on paper, but when you’re there, it’s missing something. To me, Singapore doesn’t have much soul, character or heart. It’s a bit sterile, it’s hot, humid and doesn’t really appeal as a holiday destination. The funny thing is, despite the fact I don’t rate it as a holiday destination, I wouldn’t mind living there.
I’ve stayed in three different areas in Singapore, Orchard Road close to where all the embassies are right in the hear of the shopping district, Sentosa, and Marina Bay. Out of those, I think I preferred Marina Bay but it depends on who you have with you and what type of things you want to do. Sentosa is a more resort feel, Orchard Road is the place to be if you want to spend all your money shopping, and Marina Bay is probably best if you want to do a bit of everything.
Getting to Singapore is easy, most major cities around the world have direct flights into there and from Hong Kong there’s over 20 flights daily, at all times of the day, on Cathay, Singapore, Scoot, Jetstar and United. Singapore Airport (Changi Airport) is pretty much widely considered by everybody to be the best airport in the world, and with good reason. If you have an overnight stay in Singapore, don’t bother leaving the airport, and you’ll find out why Changi Airport is consistently voted number 1.
