Decided to go to Van Gogh Alive Hong Kong on a shitty Sunday morning. Booked online but got a few error messages on my PC but for some reason tried on my phone and all ok. Anyway cost was about $460 for 1 adult a 1 child, which for what you get, I thought was a bit expensive. Grobbler’s not into art at all and always gives a negative when I ask if wants to go to Tai Kwun, but I thought being a bit interactive and not just paintings, he might think this is alright. I’m not really into art massively apart from photography, but will happily go to art exhibitions, galleries and museums and the like. Anyway for kids, Van Gogh Alive Hong Kong got a 1/10 from Grobbler, who is now 6 1/2 and about a 6/10 from me.
What exactly is Van Gogh Alive Hong Kong? The Van Gogh Alive Hong Kong headlines it’s “The most visited multi-sensory exhibition experience in the world”. More from the website:
“Experience an art exhibition like no other. Transcend time and space as you accompany Vincent van Gogh on a journey through Arles, Saint Rémy and Auvers-sur-Oise, where he created most of his timeless masterpieces.
Set to an evocative classical music score, a thrilling display of over 3,000 inspirational images transforms every surface – walls, columns, ceilings and even floors.
Adults and children alike will forge their own paths and find their own meaning as they wander through the galleries, exploring hidden nooks, viewing artworks from new angles and discovering unique perspectives.”
It’s at FTLife Tower in Kowloon Bay. About a block from Megabox and with plenty of parking nearby, both at the the actual building it’s on, and opposite and across the street, as well ample parking in Megabox. Easy to find and get to, it took about 25 minutes from Pokfulam on a Sunday morning. They stagger the sessions, and they’re available to book online every 30 minutes. When you get there you line up and do a bit of a follow the leader. It’s a bit Mickey Mouse but you get in eventually. There is the option to buy tickets on the spot but not sure how that works if the session is full.
There’s no limit to how long you can stay at Van Gogh Alive Hong Kong, we probably stayed 30 minutes but we’re both uncultured peasants. Even so I think you’d struggle staying for more than an hour. I won’t spoil it by going into detail about exactly what’s inside but it’s alright, I mean worth going if you have nothing better to do but if you’re not hugely into art, I wouldn’t be rushing over there to go see it. I thought it was pretty cool without being that great and although it wasn’t the best thing in the world, I wouldn’t call it a waste of a morning.
There’s a gift shop at the end selling t-shirts, pencils, mugs and that type of crap and some photo ops with cut outs you can have at the end. It’s on for a while so was not that crowded and if you go weekdays it’s probably even less crowded. Don’t think I’d want to be in here with loads of people. We got in and basically went to the end first and then went backwards. There’s a chance to draw some stuff, Grobbler and I both stick figure experts so weren’t that interested in that but other kids were.
