We stayed at the Sapporo Grand Hotel in the middle of winter for a couple of nights after a weeks skiing in Rusutsu. Apart from the ordeal getting to the hotel, it’s fine, no bells and whistles here but satisfactory for a couple of nights.
Biggest complaint was getting to the damn hotel, it’s right in the city center and we spent probably an hour a half getting from the outer city to the hotel, total of about 5km’s. Traffic was diabolical but obviously beyond the hotel’s control and you’re going to face that with most hotels in the downtown of Sapporo.
Stayed in a Deluxe Twin room at the Sapporo Grand Hotel, which during off peak seasons can be had for around HKD$500 a night, which is rather cheap for a hotel in Japan. Wasn’t expecting much, and I wouldn’t say we were pleasantly surprised, but I’ve stayed in worse for more money. Rooms are a decent size, three beds next to each other which Grobbler spent hours upon hours jumping from one to another. There’s a good heating system (which you need in Sapporo because it’s literally freezing) and you can dry off clothes quickly. Beds are alright comfort wise, you’re not going to be spending the day making love to the soft light sheets in here but perfectly fine for a god nights sleep.
Bathroom is a bit small but nothing too bad and about what you’d expect at this level. Service was fine, staff are friendly but didn’t have any requests or much interaction with them so not sure how they are with special requests. The Sapporo Grand Hotel is close to the JR Underground, which has a bit of shopping and a few malls to keep you busy. It’s also just a few minutes to Odori Park, which is basically in the middle of the city.
Overall not bad, if you’re looking for a cheaper hotel in Sapporo that’s totally adequate to stay a few nights in, the Sapporo Grand Hotel will be fine for you.
