things to do in sydney

There’s not a lot of things to do in Sydney that are actually attractions or single entities.  Sydney is a city that you can just walk around and explore and that in itself is something to do.  From the Sydney Opera House to Bondi beach to Darling Harbour, these are all really just parts of the city that in themselves are worth seeing and just having a walk around.  Of course, the Sydney Opera House is on everyones list of things to do in Sydney and there’s plenty of arts, shows, exhibitions and performances there on a regular basis, as well as tours of the actual opera house, but a lot of people will just wander about the outside and walk to the Botanic Gardens.

If you look at almost any list of things to do in Sydney, you’ll get pretty much the same things – Sydney Harbour, the Sydney Harbour bridge, the Opera House, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Bondi Beach and the walks to and from it, Darling Harbour and the like – mostly places and locations, which is not a bad thing, there’s just nothing special and particularly iconic outside the Sydney Opera House that I would consider an absolute must see or do, and there’s nothing in Sydney that you’d say “you’ve got to see it before you die”.

We did a fair share of the so called “top things to do in Sydney” and really didn’t find any of them particularly great.  Some might say it’s because I’m a kiwi, but I loved Melbourne and thought that was miles above Sydney, in almost ever aspect.  Perhaps it’s better to see what Grobbler thought about everything in his Toucan’s Tips for Kids, where he goes into a bit more detail about the things to do in Sydney he liked and isn’t so cynical about the place.
