Melbourne Attractions

Here’s some more details about a few Melbourne attractions and places to visit that we didn’t cover in the Things to Do in Melbourne.

400 Gradi was voted the best pizza in the world in 2014, which is a while back, but it’s become, at least for many of the locals, one of the best Melbourne attractions with 5 branches. Check out their website which has more info and where to find them.

The State Library of Victoria is one of Melbourne’s most iconic attractions and really a must-see especially since you’re almost certainly going to be passing by it. Inside there’s over 2 million books, and if you spend a bit of time exploring, you can sit yourself down in one of the so called “hidden rooms”. There’s a nice grass bank outside that people like to have lunch on.  One of the best libraries I’ve ever been to.

Southbank is lovely, just walk along the river, loads of restaurants, bars, a shopping mall and buskers and performers usually come out in the afternoon, early evening.  From Flinders St Station end, walk right along to DFS South Wharf, probably about a half an hour walk but you can stop along the way and feed the ducks and some geese in the river or just have sit down and a coffee.

Check the schedule and head to the MCG to see an AFL or cricket game.  If you have even a little bit of interest in sport, you’ve got to check it out.  This is where the first ever test match in Cricket was played and if you’re lucky enough to be in Melbourne during the last Saturday in September, head to the AFL Grand Final where you and 100,000+ people will pack the place and experience an atmosphere you don’t get too many other places.  The hold tours and things at the MCG, for those, sporting events and more info, check out their website here.

Hosier Lane can get rather busy with tourists taking 18,000 selfies of the graffiti art, but if you go early, you might be lucky enough to have the place to yourself.  Forget about the afternoons, it’s a zoo.
