Here’s some other things to do in Hawaii and things you might find helpful before visiting Hawaii, specifically Honolulu and Maui.

There’s plenty of flights into Hawaii from all over the USA and from Asia, you usually have to stopover in Tokyo or Seoul. From there it’s still about a 7 hour flight time. If you’re going all that way then you might as well make take the effort to get to Maui, which is less touristy and you can get away from the crowds here more easily.

If you want to get away from Waikiki beach, here’s some other beaches on Oahu that are worth checking out.  Kawela Bay or Turtle Bay, situated on Oahu’s northeastern tip is largely sheltered and protected from large waves so not great for surfing but ideal for snorkelling.  If it’s surfing you’re after, Sunset Beach goes from Ehukai Beach (often called the Banzai Pipeline) to Sunset Point.  This is a two-mile stretch of beach that’s considered one of the longest rideable surf spots in the world.  In the winter, real surfers head to Waimea beach which is renowned for having some monster waves.

Waimanalo Beach is a six and half kilometre stretch of sand about 15-25 minutes past Makapuu Lighthouse.  This beach is popular with many locals who like to picnic and party here late into the night. It’s got gentle waves which make it a great place to bodyboard or bodysurf. For more about beaches in Oahu, check out this website here.

There’s some really nice golf courses in Hawaii including the Moanalua Golf Club built in 1898.  Waialae Country Club is host to the PGA Tour’s Sony Open and there’s a bunch of other courses that I’d consider world class as well as a lot of resort courses that cater to the average hacker.  If you have time, it’s worth trying to play some of them as they’re often laid out in the mountains with some spectacular views.
