Hawaii, USA

If you're on the west coast of the US for other destinations, Hawaii is worth a visit but it's very touristy and hard to get away from the crowds.

I went to Hawaii (Waikiki and Maui) when I was a kid, probably more than 30 years ago, but can still remember quite a bit about it.  My sister recently went and I also have a mate living there with kids so have got some more updated information about it coming up.

Hawaii is a bit of a cliche of a holiday to me, it’s nice for sure, year round good weather, some nice beaches and a resort feel, but it’s a little touristy and unless you live in the US, quite a way to go. From Asia, if you’re looking for a good beach destination to go, I can think of many better beaches with better food, better service, much closer and cheaper and not so touristy, so it’s a tough call to go to Hawaii for me.  Lot of Japanese still choose to go there, and it’s obviously popular with mainland American’s but if you’re from any other part of the world, choosing to go to Hawaii is a hard choice with so many other great beach destinations around.

I’m just going to concentrate on Honolulu and Maui here, the two places I went, and two places my mate has lived in with his kids.  If Honolulu didn’t have so many tourists, like any other destination, it’d be much better. It’s got a laid back atmosphere and Waikiki beach, even with the crowds, is nice and it’s proximity to the Waikiki is always going to keep people coming.  Most of the good hotels are in Waikiki and pretty much most of the best things to do in Waikiki are within half an hour of the city center.
