Koh Samui, Thailand

Koh Samui Beach

Which Koh Samui beach is the best is totally subjective, for me, it’s the one with the least amount of people and not filled with so many rocks that you can’t walk barefoot in.  Chaweng Beach is the main Koh Samui beach and also the most popular, by far.  Sometimes it’s hard to sit back and relax on your chair on the beach without having someone coming up to you and trying to sell you something every 5 minutes, especially if you’re a honky (white face).  This is where all the action is and also where a lot of the backpackers stay.  If that’s your scene, then Chaweng Beach is the one for you.

Koh Samui Beaches - Chaweng

Chaweng Beach

Maenam Beach is a long, sometimes windy beach which tends to be much quieter than most other beaches in Koh Samui.  It’s far from the main road which makes it less quieter noise wise and because it’s so long, there doesn’t appear to be as many people as say Chaweng Beach, although this Koh Samuui beach is full of cheap bungalows and more upscale resorts.  Not too many rocks and when the tides out you can walk out for ages, great for the kids.  Away from it all and not much to do at night.

Koh Samui Beaches - Bophut

Bophut

Bophut Beach – most famous for the Fishermans’s village, the actual beach is narrow with not much sand between the water and things on shore.  If you’re after sweeping sandy white beaches, this is not the beach to go.

Lamai Beach – has gained a bit of reputation as being for cheap charlies, largely due to the fact that there’s a lot of cheaper hotels here. It’s the second largest Koh Samui beach but is noticeable quieter than Chaweng, although still has quite a few restaurants and shops around.
