Other than your normal beach activities, there’s not a whole lot of things to do in Koh Samui so don’t expect to go there and have much more to do than sit by the pool or on the beach with a drink or two and take selfies of yourself while you suck your stomach in. Here’s a few things to do in Koh Samui that don’t involve alcohol and phones:
Big Buddha
Seems to be on every single list of things to do in Koh Samui but if you live in Asia and have seen about 23,000 other Big Buddha’s, you’re not going to get your rocks off by visiting this one. Yes, it’s big, and yes, it’s Buddha. Not much else to say here. There’s more buddha’s inside and the obligatory souvenir shop trying to sell you buddha’s and other religious crap for twice the price you might pay down town.
Bophut Fishermans Village Market
Every Friday the locals lip their lips in the hope of ripping off as many tourists as possible. Okay, that was a bit ridiculous, but if you’re well dressed and appear to get excited by wooden frogs and find the wooden penises amusing, you’ll be targeted as a first time tourist and they’ll come at you with the highest prices imaginable. You can bargain for many things, start at half the price as a general rule. That applies for things like souvenirs, crafts, clothing, fake watches and any jewellery but not food, which should be dirt cheap to begin with. The Village becomes a walking street every Friday from about 5p.m to 11p.m. Nothing special if you live in Asia but worth a squizz if it’s your first time. Put in on your list of things to do in Koh Samui as can be quite nice at night.
There’s quite a few waterfalls on Koh Samui but don’t get too excited, these are not Niagara falls and might be better off being described as “trickles down some rocks”. Hire a motorbike and ride around the Island, apparently I crashed when I did it one time but I have no memory of that! Regardless, if you’ve never been here, this is probably one of the better things to do in Koh Samui as you can ride around and find some deserted beaches and get away from the crowds.
