Things To Do in Boho With Kids – Apart from snorkeling, swimming, looking for gecko’s in our hotel, we didn’t do an awful lot apart from one tour to Balicasag Island and Virgin Island, which is essentially a sand bar in the middle of the ocean. Balicasag Island is where the best snorkeling is in Bohol. We took a cool outrigger boat that doesn’t go that fast and took about 45 minutes to get to the island. When you get there you then transfer to a tiny little canoe thing and we were taken to sea some some turtles.
We jumped out of the boat and followed him around, which Grobbler absolutely loved. The boat guy then paddles you out to the drop off where there’s more fish. Didn’t think it was great snorkeling but guess it depends on where you’ve been before. Also saw a sea turtle in the deep. There’s definitely plenty of fish and a few nice ones, but nothing spectacular, unless you’ve never been snorkeling before, in which case you’ll probably find it amazing. Still, this is one of the best Things To Do in Boho With Kids and shouldn’t be missed.
Spent about an hour and a bit here, then about 20 minutes boat ride to Virgin Island. I’d read about this and a lot of people were saying it was crowded and touristy so I expected the worse but I thought it was totally fine. Yes, there are quite a few boats here but it kind of makes the place. It’s basically a giant sand bar where you can get off the bot and wade around in knee/waist deep water and have a bite to eat. Most things are around 30 pesos so dirt cheap.
There’s vendors selling all kinds of shit, fried bananas (excellent), sausages (also excellent according to Grobbler), fried sweet potatoes, fish (including sword fish) and loads of other stuff. Apparently there’s a souvenir shop but we didn’t see it nor were we interested in it even if we did see it. Boats just moor here and we must have spent about an hour just walking around. Although the snorkeling wasn’t that fantastic, the sand bar is definitely worth the trip and worth a visit by itself (without the snorkeling). This wouldn’t just be one of the best Things To Do in Boho With Kids, but one of the best things we’ve done anywhere.
It’s a really unique and fun experience and with all the boats there, like I mentioned, it really made the place better. I couldn’t imagine it having nobody there, would be a bit weird. It’s not crowded and while there are lots of people there, many of them just sit on the boat and wait for vendors to try and sell them shit. This is definitely worth a visit and even if your kids are don’t swim, or snorkel, they can have a good time here and won’t have done anything like this before. As far as Things To Do in Boho With Kids go, this has gotta be the best.
Just that trip alone was worth coming to Bohol so if you come here, definitely try and book a trip out here. We booked it through the hotel but you can book it online or just walk along Alona beach and find one of the many dive/snorkeling shops that offer tours. Actually the next day we tried to go to Virgin Island around 4p.m. The Dive Center at the Resort couldn’t organise anything but I’d read if you just walk down the beach you can find guys trying sell you boat rides.
Found one, had some official looking t-shirt on, something like “Official Alona Beach Tourist Assistant”. He was actually pretty helpful and said it’d be 2000 pesos for the boat but mentioned it was low tide. And apparently when it’s low tide, nobody is there, the vendors aren’t there and I can imagine it wouldn’t be such a novelty having the sand bar actually sticking out of the water. The whole attraction of it, and what makes it special, is that fact you can wade around in waist high water and get shit to eat.
Anyway, he couldn’t find us a boat as it was late and last minute but was pretty helpful and tried his best. So anyway, if you plan on going here, check with whomever you book it with that it’s going to be the right tide when you go there because when we booked this tour with the hotel nobody mentioned this to us before we went and it was just good luck we went at high tide. Overall, if you’re looking for Things To Do in Boho With Kids, make this the first thing on your list.
