The Hong Kong Maritime Museum has never been on our radar of things to do in Hong Kong with kids but with school holidays ending thought we’d go along and give it a go since it’s at the Star Ferry and easily accessible.
The Hong Kong Maritime Museum displays 3,000 years of maritime history and culture about Hong Kong and has more than 1,200 things on display in 15 galleries over 3 levels. To get to the Hong Kong Maritime Museum just head to Oier 8 which is near the Star Ferry. Entry is only $30 for adults and $15 for kids and you can check full opening hours at the Hong Kong Maritime Museum website here.
If you’re thinking about doing the Hong Kong Observation Wheel, when you buy a ticket at the Hong Kong Maritime Museum you get a 2 for 1 voucher for the wheel ad because they’re basically right next to each other, it’s probably worth going although the Observation Wheel is rather boring and not worth paying full price for unless you’re really keen on that sort of thing.
Once in, you go down a level and see some old ship models, interesting but nothing mind blowing. You then work your way up some levels and whilst there’s nothing at the Hong Kong Maritime Museum that will get you too excited, it’s all somewhat interesting and fun for the kids. The best looking thing, which was the Ship simulator, only opens on Saturday and Sunday and you need to get tickets for that in advance, which is rather a shame since it looked to be the most interesting thing in the museum.
There’s a few interactive multimedia displays, Grobbler particularly liked the one inside a container where you had to try and load the cargo ship with containers. Other than that the multimedia experience at Hong Kong Maritime Museum is rather average and bordering on a bit stink.
The staff at the Hong Kong Maritime Museum are nice and friendly which is always a welcome change to most of the miserable sods you usually get served by at Hong Kong’s most popular tourist attractions. When we went, (august 2018) quite a few exhibits were closed for renovation so if you’re really keen on your maritime then you might want to check what’s open and what’s not before going.
As far as things to do in Hong Kong with kids go, the Hong Kong Maritime Museum would rank somewhere near the middle. For the average person, I wouldn’t rushing down here or making any effort to get here, but if you’re around the area and looking for things to do, then you could spend an hour here if you’re looking to fill in an hour.
If you live in Hong Kong, same thing applies. If you’re really struggling for things to do in Hong Kong with kids, then give it a go. I’ve lived here almost 8 years and don’t regret that I didn’t go sooner. It’s alright, something different to do but don’t think we’d be going back in a hurry.
