Without doubt, the best thing about Miyazaki is the lack of people, locals or tourists. It’s not really on anybody’s radar when most people think of Japan, and even after you’ve gone through Tokyo, Kyoto, skiing in Niseko, Okinawa, Osaka, and Nagoya – Miyazaki still won’t come up on most peoples places to want to visit in Japan.
For sure, there isn’t a whole lot to do in Miyazaki for either adults or kids, but if you want to spend some quality time with your kids, I reckon this is a good place to go. I presume most people go to Miyazaki for the golf, but even though I’m a former golf professional and would have quite liked to have teed it up, I was more than happy to relax and just ride bikes around and hang out at the beaches, which aren’t all that great either, but there’s nobody on them, which makes them amongst the best beaches in Asia for me.
We stayed at the Sheraton Grande Ocean Resort, which was average at best, but in quite a good location with golf and excellent bike riding tracks down to the “beaches”. Head down to Aoshima, about a 25 minute drive and you can spend a day there, again with very people around. If you’re looking for a short getaway from Hong Kong and want the civility and politeness of the Japanese without the crowds of Tokyo, take a trip to Miyazaki, one of the most relaxing holidays we’ve been to in Japan or anywhere in Asia for that matter. It’s not blow your socks off, but just a nice long weekend getaway close to Hong Kong.
