We’ve been to the Maldives twice and if it wasn’t so expensive, we’d probably go every year, at least I would! This is one of the few places that actually looks better in person than the photographs and whilst you can stay at cheaper places nowadays, I highly recommend you reach deep into your wallet, suck it up and just go for broke on the accommodation. This isn’t a place to slum it so if you’re a budget traveler, this is probably not the place for you.
You won’t find any McDonald’s here, each hotel is basically on it’s own Island so you’re never going to get shitloads of people and that’s the best thing about the Maldives. If you like beach holidays and your idea of the perfect holiday is sitting on a beach doing absolutely stuff all, the Maldives is the place to go.
It’s a bit of a journey to get there, but it includes a seaplane trip, which the kids will enjoy, unless you stay at one of the resorts near Male, in which case you’ll be taken their by speedboat. Going from Hong Kong, if you fly direct on Cathay, you have no choice but to stay the night in Male, I’d think about flying via Singapore or Bangkok.
The Maldives is all about relaxation and literally getting away from it all. This is my second favourite place in the world, and my favourite beach holiday by a long, long way. Nothing beats it or even comes close, and if you’ve been working yourself to death or feeling majorly stressed out, a trip here will fix that very fast. Make sure get here once in your life time.
