I guess one reason why Da Nang is quite popular is because of it’s location, sandy beaches and quietness compared to say Ho Chi Minh, but I don’t think I’d go back again. It was terribly underwhelming with very little to do and see and the worst part was the shite weather we had on both occasions.
Whether you like it or not, the weather plays a huge part in what you think of any destination. If it pisses down with rain everyday wherever you are, there’s not a lot you can do and you’re more than likely to think less of that place. This is perhaps one reason why Da Nang is not going to fear well here. We also had a rather unfortunate incident at the InterContinental Da Nang, that is explained, not in full detail, here. This is the reason we ended up staying here twice. Basically it rained or was crappy the whole time we were in Da Nang and there’s not a whole lot to do other than play golf and visit a few local landmarks, which are packed with mainland Chinese tourists and not that great regardless.
If I was looking to do a golf trip somewhere close to Hong Kong, I can see why Da Nang might be a good option, there’s a load of great golf courses around, it’s relatively cheap and doesn’t take long to get to. Honestly though, I still much prefer Thailand over Vietnam, it’s got better food, the service is better and there’s more things to do. This is obviously subjective, but Da Nang and Vietnam as a whole just doesn’t do it for me.
Perhaps we just got unlucky with the weather, on the positive side the food was good and the InterContinental Da Nang is a fantastic resort despite what happened so maybe we’ll go back and give it another chance but that’s not going to be anytime soon.
