Chiang Mai to Hong Kong Cathay Dragon

Short flight on a 3-3 configuration in economy and 2-2 in the small business class. Totally fine but not worth the extra you usually pay over HK Express and Air Asia.

Got a Chiang Mai to Hong Kong Cathay Dragon ticket one way so thought I’d do a bit of a review as many of you seem to be interested in my flight reports.  For the trip from Hong Kong to Chiang Mai, I used Air Asia, and you can read about that one here. Anyway, the Cathay Dragon flight from Chiang Mai to Hong Kong leaves at 6:20p.m and is scheduled to arrive at 10:10p.m.

Check-in for Chiang Mai to Hong Kong Cathay Dragon Flight KA233 opens two and half hours before departure,  I had to check out of my hotel (Art Mai Gallery Hotel Chiang Mai) at 2p.m and considered doing some shopping at Central Airport Plaza Chiang Mai but there was a Crusaders vs Chiefs game on so decided to head to the airport early and was there at 2:30p.m.   This was a bit of a mistake as Chiang Mai airport is a bit shit and in bad need of a major upgrade. There’s no decent cafe’s or restaurants in either domestic or international terminals and I had to sit in this rock had seat for the game in this shit little cafe in domestic.  Was better off on some comfy seats back at the hotel.

Anyway, checked in for my Chiang Mai to Hong Kong Cathay Dragon flight KA233 at 4:30ish. About 3 counters open, and not many people at any of them so didn’t wait at all.  Boarded on time and the flight took off on time. It’s a smallish place, business class is about 12 seats and they’re the older seats, so not separated. Definitely not worth paying or redeeming miles for those seats, especially for a 2 and half flight.  It’s a 3-3 configuration and I booked an aisle seat with someone sitting at the window and the middle seat was empty. It was a Saturday and this is usually the least expensive day to fly out of Friday, Saturday and Sunday and Monday so don’t think the flight was that full.

Service was alright, crew were friendly enough and as per most economy flights in Cathay these days, the food was atrocious.  Seems to get worse every time I fly. This flight had fish with rice or chicken with pasta. After the last Cathay flight I took I chose fish and that was pure gunk, I decided to go with chicken and rice,  First of all, it’s the first ever aeroplane meal I’ve had that was stone cold, the whole thing. On top of that it looked and tasted like a piece cat puke. I took about 2 forks full then stuck the tin foil back on.  There was some sort of dessert, not sure what it was, honestly couldn’t tell what it was. After I got a shove and pick to cut it, I took one bite and put that back. There was a biscuit, which tasted alright. Oh, and those bloody waters in a plastic sealed thing, you know, the ones where when you finally do get the lid off, the water spills all over the place.  Water has never tasted so good after eating food. I know it’s aeroplane food but I’ve had better food on Air Asia, HK Express, and the only food worse than this I’ve had was on Air India business class from Hong Kong to Delhi.

There’s no TV’s on board so even though the flights only 2 and a bit hours, bring something to watch if you like watching shit.  The flight was very early, arriving at 9:50p.m, 20 minutes ahead of schedule. Overall, with the exception of the food, Chiang Mai to Hong Kong Cathay Dragon Flight KA233 was fine. Despite complaining about the food, it doesn’t matter too much to me. It’s a short flight, not the end of the world, so no big deal, but if you’re one of those people that cares, than take that into consideration.
