We stayed in something poxy called the Duchess Suite at The Danna Langkawi. Cost was USD$4,950 for 5 nights booked through an agent, which was a bit outrageous and completely overpriced considering the location. The hotel is not that big and the building is a bit box looking from the front but up close it’s more of a colonial style hotel with some nice interiors. The suite wasn’t that big, 110sq metres apparently but a lot of it is entrance and balcony, the actual room itself is not big for a suite. Not small but for what you’re paying, I though it was quite punchy. The balcony is long and goes all around the windows so you have a good view over the swimming pool and beach. Nice. You can check out some photos of the Duchess Suite and the Danna Langkawi here. I wouldn’t call this absolute luxury, I’ve seen much better for way less, so in terms of value for money, the Danna Langkawi misses the mark by quite some way.
The swimming pool at the Danna Langkawi is gigantic, well again I’ve seen bigger, but still bigger than most and has a nice kids area that’s shallow. Unless they’ve planted some trees around it since we’ve been there, just be aware there’s very little shade. It’s a short walk to the beach, which as I’ve said in the Langkawi destination pages, is not that great. It’s just a bit messy looking and they haven’t really put any effort into making it look respectable or even half nice. Perhaps they’re trying to protect the environment, but unlikely.
The food is ok, nothing of note to complain about, which is a shame because you know how much I like to complain, some nice dishes and some pretty ordinary dishes and again, not the best value. The staff are excellent, we had a few complaints and the manager or some other dude came and talked to us and sorted things out and the other staff were friendly and went out of their way to fuss over Grobbler, who was a hit with many of the guests and the staff.
We stayed here for Christmas and to the hotels credit, unlike many other 5 star hotels, they don’t force you to pay for a 22 course Christmas Dinner. Actually this is one reason why we decided to stay here, the Datai Langkawi were trying to change us USD$1000 for 2 nights of Gala Dinner – absurd!
Anyway, if you didn’t listen to a word of advice in my Langkawi destination guide thingy, and you’ve decided to go, the Danna Langkawi is not a bad choice. The other top hotel there, the Datai, is more expensive and not on the beach. If I had to go back, I’d be ok staying at the Danna, but not over the moon.
