The Sunset Peak and Lantau Peak Hike is one of the more buggering hikes in Hong Kong, not overly challenging but the amount of stairs you need to climb up and down makes it one of the most tiring. You can start from Tung Chung, Ngong Ping 360 or where we did – Nam Shan, and start with Sunset Peak. You need to take it a little bit easy going up Sunset Peak to save some energy for the Lantau summit. Take the ferry to Mui Wo from Central here , if you’re really fit, run a couple of km’s to Nam Shan, or if you’re like the rest of us, take a bus or taxi which is about 5 minutes.
Sunset Peak and Lantau Peak Hike begins quite easily with a stroll through the bush then quickly starts into it with a bunch of stairs. On this note, most of the hikes in Hong Kong are not really hikes, but stair climbs, which figures, because Hong Kong doesn’t like green and tries to cover it up with concrete anywhere possible. But I digress, we got to the top of Sunset in just over an hour, taking it easy, spent a few minutes on top of Sunset Peak, then jogged down to Pak Kung Au. Straight into Lantau and you can feel the burn earlier than usual, it’s much more difficult climbing up Lantau after having just done Sunset Peak. As we were running down Sunset we were greeted with stares and even applause by a bunch of mainland tourists, one with a 3 year old with them, obviously they hadn’t seen that before.
Unfortunately just as we reached the top of Lantau Peak, it clouded over. It wasn’t a great day anyway, we were just doing this for the workout, and luckily we had a reasonably good day when we hiked Lantau Peak by itself, but who wants to climb a hill and be shrouded in cloud with no view? We got to Big Buddha, had some lunch (don’t eat at Ebeneezers, it’s absolutely disgusting and dirty), then took the cable car down, which was bloody freezing. The Sunset Peak and Lantau Peak Hike back to back took us 3 hours and 20 minutes, going not that fast and including breaks.
