The Peak Hong Kong hike is perhaps one of the most popular hikes in Hong Kong. There’s numerous ways to get hike to the Peak in Hong Kong, because we live in Pokfulam/Cyberport, we tend to hike only one or two routes to the Peak. The Peak Hike is an easy one, good for beginners, and if you’re an exercise freak you can go at a faster pace for a good work. We start at Cyberport, run to Aberdeen and the start of Peel Rise, a small steep climb to begin, little bit of a rest before beginning the ascent on a concrete path.
From the beginning of Peel Rise, you should be able to reach the Peak in 30-45 minutes, an hour if you’re taking it easy. Most people will stop at the top and admire the views, and you can go onto Victoria Peak (details in another post), or run down one of several different ways to begin your descent of the Peak Hong Kong hike. We take several different ways, but for a sub 2 hour hike, we take Harlech Road then Hong Trail Section 1 down to Pokfulam Resrvoir then home again. There’s a fair amount of road on the Peak Hong Kong hike, so it’s not our favourite Hong Kong hike, but this is a good sub 2 hour workout that combines road running, uphill and downhill paths and a little bit of trail running near the end.
For some never before seen views of Hong Kong, when we’re on the Peak Hong Kong hike, we sometimes take Treachorous Trail from Harlech Road, this takes you up Mount High West. There should be nobody up there, other than dickheads like myself who have nothing better to do on weekdays, the views are awesome, you can see rare views of the City as well as overlooking Cyberport.
When you get to the top, there is a fence and the downhill part says its closed and should not be attempted. Ignore this and head down, it’s a bit grown over, but definitely no worries for the average human being, again, unless you sit inside most of your life stuffing your face with donuts and McDonalds. If you’re not sure about that, head back down, and just go back on Hong Kong Trail Section 1.
As mentioned there’s numerous ways to get to the Peak, so check out our other posts on the Peak Hong Kong hike.
