Doesn’t get a whole lot better than the Mandarin Oriental Pudong Shanghai, pretty much everything you could ask for in a hotel.
As usual, and what you come to expect at every stay at any Mandarin Oriental around the world – superb service, impeccable rooms and one of the best steaks at the grill restaurant inside the hotel. The service at dinner was outstanding and what every restaurant in China, and actually around the world, should aspire to. Not the cheapest obviously but when you have food that good and service that good, it doesn’t really matter, some things are worth paying for.
Rooms are big and everything is what you expect, absolutely nothing to complain about. This is away from the crowds but still only a 10-15 minute walk into the thick of things, so excellent location without the millions of people. There’s a nice space/courtyard out the back with a clean and tidy grass area that kids can run around on which makes it perfect for families.
When I asked the concierge about where to get a battery for my Contax T3 film camera, I’d normally expect a blank stare and shrugged shoulders at a lot of hotels in China, but here, the concierge just said to leave it to me and in less than 30 minutes there was a new battery at the door. I haven’t come across that type of service at any hotel anywhere in the world.
This is the best hotel in Shanghai and China we’ve stayed at and probably some of the best service at any hotel in the world we’ve stayed in.
