Thought I’d revisit Lamma Island with kids as it’s been a few years since Grobbler and I went there and didn’t think much of it then. As usual we went from Aberdeen Pier, which has way less people than Central and if you live anywhere on Southside, is the better Pier to go from. Aberdeen to Lamma Island ferry schedule can be viewed here but sorry, don’t pay too much attention to that, because when we got there, the times were not the same as the actual sailing times. In the past we used to go to So Kwu Wan which is the quieter part of Lamma Island but this time we headed to Yung Shue Wan.
This is the main pier that ferries from Central end up at. As usual we went early, around 845 to avoid most of the crowds. Okay, so if you want the short version, Lamma Island with kids is not the best day out. It’s not the worst either but probably not somewhere you’d go on a regular basis unless you and your kids are hippies. Getting off the boat we walked through the village then about 20 minutes to Hung Shing Ye Beach. This is alright and if you’re going to Lamma Island with kids then most people will make their way here. We didn’t swim as it was winter, did the usual crab hunting for an hour and that was that.
From there we did a bit of rock climbing or rather rock hopping and ended up quite far around that we decided to go to Power Station Beach, which, as you can imagine has a wonderful view of the Power Station. Not sure how I felt about that, bit of an eye sore on one hand but also a bit unique on the other. It takes about 30 minutes to get from one to the other and is good exercise for the kids. I’d say kids over 4 or 5 could make their way around on the rocks. It’s not really dangerous, just need to be careful in some spots. If you’re the panicky type of parent then give it a miss and go back the paved way (the way you came).
Anyway from Power Station Beach it’s just a short walk back to the village. We had some lunch which was shocking. Some puke soup, absolutely foul fried rice (the kind that puts you off ever eating fried rice again) and a fish, which was alright. It’s really a lottery what restaurant you choose. Just lower your expectations as I really don’t see how many sites that review Lamma Island can say the food is excellent. I’m no foodie at all but I know a decent dish when I see it. I suspect most of these so called travel blogs didn’t even eat there and just copied from one another, which is par for the course these days.
Not else to do on Lamma Island with kids. There’s some antique shops on the way which are kind of interesting. There’s also a soccer court so you can bring a ball but don’t really think you go to Lamma Island to play soccer! You can hire bikes but because we’d been to the other side of the Island we didn’t. Overall not a bad day. An ok day to fill in the morning and lunch and have you back by mid afternoon. Would we do it again or recommend it? We’ll go back but it’s something you do once or twice a year, not every month. If you haven’t been to Lamma Island with kids or without, yeah, it’s worth going to, but only if you have lots of time.
