Lamma Island

You'll read about how you should come here to get away from the crowds but it's anything but.

I was excited to go to Lamma Island but that was short lived once I actually got there. To be fair, the couple of times I’ve been there I went from Aberdeen, which is near where I live, and that takes you to a different part of the Island than most people visit. However, all my mates tell me that part is crowded and not much better than the bit I’ve been to.

I’m going to head out here and have a run around it and check out the whole Island soon so I’ll update this post then, but until then, make do with those rather unfavourable review of it.  Basically we (Grobbler and I) went out here to see the Kamikaze Cave, which trust me, is totally not worth seeing.  For one you can’t go in because it’s full of water, so it’s basically just a hole in side of a hill.  From there, we went to Lo So Shing Sitting Out Area, which is basically a little point with some chairs.  Not much else to do here except play hide and seek and pretend you are the most useful seeker in the history of mankind.

Having exhuasted my creative game inventing there, we headed to Lo So Shing Beach. This is about a 20 minute walk, 30 minutes from where the Aberdeen-Lamma Island drops you off.  Easy walk usually but in the middle of summer, as with most things in Hong Kong, it’s not that pleasant.  Thank god when we got to Lo So Shing Beach there weren’t that many people there, in fact there were less than 10.  That first time it was clean and alright, had a wee swim but really there’s no shade so we returned home.

The next time we went there was rubbish everywhere and it was even hotter.  And a few months later, they ended up having to close most of the beaches there because all the rubbish was floating down from China and destroying the beaches. Nice.  As I said, I’ll go back there, but only to check out the main village, which is where a lot of hippies live and smoke pot.  There’s apparently some good hiking trails so we’ll do that too and give you a full report soon.
