Kowloon Walled City Park is situated on where the original Kowloon Walled City used to be. It’s worth reading up about the history of Kowloon Walled City as it’s quite interesting and used to be where the Triads hung out and was basically a massive walled city of crime and debauchery. Today, it’s basically just a typical Hong Kong “Park”, which means no grass, just concrete paths, a few ponds and lots of “Don’t do this” signs.
I took out Grobbler out here a few years back expecting to get some ace photos but was rather disappointed. It’s now just a garden with a very remnants of what used to be one of Hong Kong’s most famous areas. We drove out here and parked at a nearby shopping mall (which is shite) and 1 minute walk and you’re basically inside Kowloon Walled City Park. It’s much smaller than I thought, and you can walk around here in about 15 minutes. Luckily there’s a few ponds with some fish and turtles so Grobbler was happy.
Probably the best thing about Kowloon Walled City Park is the bike riding track, where you can hire bikes and ride around a small track ideal for young kids. It’s got a few mounds you can ride up and down and there’s a lot of younger kids learning to ride bikes. I was told by a local that Grobbler shouldn’t have been biking and I was putting him in danger. You can imagine where I told him where to go. Typical panicky local parent who keeps their kids at arms reach 24/7 and goes into a state of panic when their kid falls over and grazes their leg. Anyway, the guys at the local bike hire shop are friendly and speak enough English to hire you a bike.
As with a lot of the things to do in Hong Kong with kids, I’m glad I went once, but don’t really have any desire to go back again. If you’re a tourist, this is not really near anything else worth doing and as it’s a little bit out of the way, I wouldn’t be rushing here. It’s not bad, but not really worth wasting half a day if you’re only in Hong Kong for a few days, or even a week.
You’ll have an ok time here, bit of space to play some games and there’s some older folks doing Tai Chi so quite relaxing. If it was a bit closer then it’d probably be worth going but you won’t be missing too much if you don’t get to see this.
