Before going, ask yourself what you’re going to do to make your Wanaka photography stand out from thousands and thousands of photos already taken. We got wedding photos taken in Wanaka and hired a helicopter up to the Northern peninsula of Mt Roy, bit of walking down some tussock but unless you’re the size and shape of Andre the Giant, you should be right. The company we hired was Aspiring Photography – one of a few Wanaka photography companies. He was recommended by a cousin I have living in Wanaka and do a good job. if you don’t want to pay for a helicopter, you can hike up Roys Peak, more about that in my post here. You probably don’t want to be hiking up Roy’s Peak with a massive DSLR and 10 lenses, a wide and telephoto will do.
The Wanaka Tree is the tree you will see in most Wanaka photography portfolios, a lone tree in the water with the mountains in the background will make most photographers moist. If you go there early morning you probably don’t anything but a tripod, late evening take some ND filters as well to smooth out the water although on most nights, if the lake has been choppy during the day, it’ll always smooth out around sunset.
Wanaka is not a place for street photography, well of course you can wander through the town but you’re not going to come back with something that compete with the streets of Mumbai. If you like landscape photography, you’ll think you’re in Landscape heaven when you visit Wanaka.
Send us any questions or comments you have about Wanaka photography via email or ask us on twitter.
If you’d like to know the contact Aspiring Photography and would like an intro, happy to do that, ditto for the helicopter company. Both of the guys that run those are top blokes and will have a good yarn with you.
