October is fall in Lake Placid and the trees look absolutely beautiful with their oranges, yellows, golds, maroons and reds. You can check out this page for the peak foliage times in Lake Placid if you’re into that sort of thing.
Lake Placid is about 450km from New York City. When I lived here I used to take a Greyhound down to NYC quite often, which is about USD$70-$80 and takes 8 hours. Driving is about 5-6 hours. It’s only 2 hours from Montreal, 3 hours from Ottawa, 5 hours from Boston and 2 1/2 hours from Albany.
There’s some lovely little lodges, Inn’s and cabins right on Mirror Lake in Lake Placid and really, it’s worth paying a bit more to be right on the lake front. The Crown Plaza is on a hill and has the best views. Pricing is seasonal and it can get busy in the middle of the summer and winter so book in advance.
For something nice to eat, the locals go to the Boat House restaurant on main street and overlooking Mirror Lake. This is about as posh as it gets in Lake Placid but you can show up looking scruffy as I always did and nobody will care. Service is excellent, at least it was when I went there, food is nice, nothing absolutely spectacular, but good enough you’d go back again.
Lake Placid is a small town, with a permanent population of about 2.500. Everybody knows everybody and the Lussi’s are at the center of it all, owning the Crown Plaza and Lake Placid Club and some other properties. Families like this have a few enemies and are the envy of many, but they really looked after me when I was there and they couldn’t have been any nicer.
