Basically all the things to do in Lake Placid are outdoors so if you enjoy being outside and active, this is going to be a great place to go. If you like indoor things and watch a lot of TV, then give it a miss and stay home.
Skiing at Whiteface – Any destination that’s held the winter olympics you know you’re not going to be short of snow. With Whiteface being one of the highest peaks in the Adirondacks, it’s skiing is recognised as one of the best in the area and attracts lots of skiers from NY City and further. It’s been upgraded and the new ski resort has the greatest vertical of any lift-serviced mountain in the Northeast region of the USA. There’s a lot of great runs here with mile after mile of impeccably groomed cruising trails, almost 100% snowmaking coverage and a 5-star ski and snowboard school.
Whiteface isn’t just about skiing and snowboarding though. One of the most popular things to do in Lake Placid in the summer is actually the bobsled where you rip down at quite a speed on the olympic bob sled track. Don’t worry, you can’t drive because they’d be in for some rather hefty lawsuits if they let that happen. Check out where to book, how to get there and opening hours and days here.
Golf – If you golf, definitely check out the Lake Placid Club and it’s 45 holes of golf with two distinct courses. The Mountain Course is short and narrow with lots of blind shots and was re-designed by Alistair McKenzie, the same cat responsible for Augusta. The Links course is long and open and when the wind blows, which it often does, it’s a rather big challenge. The first tee shot outside the club house overlooking the Adirondacks is spectacular and one of the best I’ve tee off from anywhere in the world.
A Movie in the 1926 built movie theatre – I don’t usually watch any movies when I’m traveling (what’s the point), but if it’s raining and you’re looking for things to do in Lake Placid, check this one out for a blast from the past. I’ve been here a few times to try and bust a few moves on a German and Austrian nanny while I was living there and both times I ended up getting a bit of action!
