Vienna Photography

Definitely no need to even consider a Vienna photography tour when visiting this city, just walk around the inner city/historic center and you’ll see loads of great shots and photo opportunities.

Take a wide angle because you’ll need it for the architecture and many beautiful buildings around town.  It’s not a colourful city as such so if you like to shoot black and white, you’ll like photographing Vienna.  My biggest tip I can give is go early to all the landmarks, castles etc. Some of them open very early and most of them the outside opens extremely early.  We went along to Shonbrunn Palace at 7a.m and the place was empty barring a few people running.   The actual inside of the palace doesn’t open until later, but if you want to get unimpeded, people-free shots, go early and you’ll have less distractions.  I lost my wallet there and had to go back in the afternoon and the place was packed. It’ll make a huge difference to your Vienna photography if you can get up and go early.

People don’t really like you taking photos of them in the street and will get a bit pissed at you so street photography in Vienna in terms of taking photos of people, is not that great.  It’s also a little boring as it’s mainly just a lot of tourists walking around the city.  I guess it depends on what you like to photograph and your style.  There’s a lot of white/cream buildings so if you get the sun out and walk around the city, you can get some really wicked contrasty shots of the white buildings and dark shadows.

If you’re a cheap bastard and still insist on going a Vienna photography tour, just visit one of the websites, look at their itineraries, and go to all the places listed.  But again, there’s no real need, it’s an easy city get around and walk around, there’s not many hidden corners or alleyways or places to see in Vienna, everything will be laid out in front of you.
