The Austrian lakes district was so good I could have stayed there forever. There’s no pollution, no smog, no haze, no noisy crowds and it’s just you, your Mum and Dad, and nature. Isn’t that what life’s about?!
Driving a boat all by myself at 4 1/2 years old! What more could a boy ask for! Didn’t think much of the drive from Prague to Linz, and then from Linz to Hallstatt, it’s basically most of the day so I ended up carking it in the backseat after our stop in Cesky Krumlov. We finally got to Hallstatt and the Austrian Lakes District around 4-5p.m, but still pretty hot. Me and my Dad had a swim but it was so cold my doodle frizzled up like a frightened hedgehog. For basically the whole of the next morning, and most of the afternoon, and the next day, and the next day, and the day after that, I was Captain Phillips, driving boats around all the lakes in the Austrian lakes district. Dad got as black as the somali pirates so it was quite fitting. I got to drive the boat while my Mum and Dad sat in the back, we had a picnic in the back of the boat, fed swans from the boat, and at one stage I even did wee in a bottle in the boat! Totally awesome and I gave it a 1,000,000 out of 10.
Other than that, I really enjoyed Grundlsee and pretty much every other lake we visited in the Austrian Lakes district, you can wade out into the water just a little bit and see trout and try and catch them. This was a highlight for me and any kid who’s half normal will be excited about this. There’s no theme parks or movie theatres or kids adventurelands anywhere to be seen in Salzkammergut and the Austrian lakes district, it’s just you and nature and that means your mum and dad will usually pay more attention to you – nice!
You might want to bring a few small toys because if you’re not the outdoors and swimming/water type of kid, it might get a bit boring, but you can feed fish, swans, ducks, do duck farts with stones, skim stones, and loads of other cool things in all of the lakes. If you want a holiday away from it all and have had enough of big cities, the Austrian lakes are the place to go. But sshhhhh, don’t tell too many people or they’ll ruin it.
