Quite a few good things to do in Prague with kids so bring them along and they won’t be too bored, at least for 3-4 days they should be fine.
The Prague Zoo has some pretty high ratings on TripAdvisor and rightly so (for a change), it’s a big zoo with loads of animals that are generally well kept and easy to see. Currently the flavour of the month is reptiles, in particular lizards and snakes, so that’s about all I was interested in. The Prague Zoo is about 20-25 minutes from the Castle district by taxi. Apparently you can get public transport there quite easily but mum and dad are a bit snobbish when it comes to that when we travel. Entry fee is cheap, about CZK200 for adults and CZK 150 for kids 3-15. The Prague Zoo opens at 9:00a.m, we got there just after and there were already a lot of people there but it’s so big, it’s not that crowded. This is definitely one of, if not the best thing to do in Prague with kids.
The Prague Zoo covers 58 hectares, 12 pavilions and over 150 exhibits. Apparently there’s 10km of walking tracks so wear sneakers. Booyaka. Once in, we stormed to the Terrarium, which is full of snakes. Not bad, not bad at all but quite small and not that many snakes. On the way we blew past some penguins, lemurs, pheasants and a few other animals which I had no interest in. The Terrarium is in a space called Bororo Reserve, which has a big fort and play area, unfortunately it was closed. From there we wombled over to the Giant Salamander House and then the Feline and Reptile Pavilion, which was absolute lizard heaven. There’s a Tiger in there pacing backwards and forwards, a sure sign he’s going insane, a few other felines that I wasn’t that impressed by (but you might be), and loads of lizards. I probably spent a good 30 minutes in there watching the lizards and snakes. Overall I give the Feline and Reptile a 9/10. If you’ve got kids who are into reptiles and are looking for things to do in Prague with kids, this alone is a must-see.
After that we went to the childrens zoo where you can pat some sheep and goats and a few other animals. It was ok, I freaked out a bit when patting the goats as they tried to attack me (they just walked over and wanted some grass, but I’m calling it an attack). It’s more for townies (people who live in cities and who freak out when they get mud on their shoe) and smaller kids, but it’s worth checking out. Those of you who know who me will know I’m not a fan of monkeys, apes, gorillas or anything of the sort. Other than having funny nut sacks, I find them quite uninspiring. Anyway they’re near the Kids Zoo area so you can check those out.
Next we headed up the little chairlift to get to the top and headed straight for the komodo dragons. Up top is where all the african animals are, elephants, zebras, giraffes, hippos, tigers and that sort of thing. There’s also polar bears, honey badgers, kangaroos and pretty much most animals that you’d want to see. I blew them off because, well, Reptiles Rule the world. If I hadn’t of been so obsessed with reptiles and wanted to see all the animals, we could easily spend a day in here. Definitely worth seeing.
For me, Prague Castle was a bit boring, but ok. I didn’t get much attention because Mum and Dad were busy trying to show one another how sophisticated and cultured they and making silly comments about the castle. Still if you’re in Prague with kids, it’s worth taking them to see Prague Castle. The other highlight was heading down to Charles Bridge and feeding the big swans and ducks. You can see the exact location on Toucan’s Prague Map. On the way, check out the statues of two guys weeing. They move and it’s quite entertaining, their doodles were way bigger than mine which I found hilarious.
Grobbler Out.
