A lot of the things to do in Prague consist of museums, cathedrals and that type of thing, which get pretty boring pretty quickly. I’ve left those out here and just gone with a few things to do in Prague suitable for kids too.
After 3 days of pretty boring stuff for Grobbler in Vienna, first on our list of things to do in Prague is the Prague Zoo, about a 20 minute taxi ride from the castle district. Check out Toucan’s Tips for Kids for Grobblers thoughts on the Prague Zoo, I thought it was pretty good, one of the better zoo’s we’ve been to but not an absolute must-see unless you’re into animals. Oddly there were a lot of adults there with no kids, probably the most amount of couples without kids I’ve seen at a zoo anywhere in the world. Not sure what that means, perhaps the Europeans love their animals.
Prague Castle is just up the road and some stairs from the hotel we stayed in – Alchymist Prague Castle Suites. We went here in the afternoon so it was quite busy, if you can, go early morning as soon as it’s open. It’s not bad, I mean quite impressive as far as castles go, but I’m not really one for history so this type of place isn’t really up my alley. It’s definitely worth seeing, and you could easily spend at least half a day there. The view is quite good and overlooks most of the city. Again, there were quite a lot of people there, to me, that takes away from the experience but that’s just me being a knob. It’s a pretty much must-do on any list of things to do in Prague and you won’t be disappointed by it so give it a go.
On the second day we went up to Petrin Hill, it’s walkable from the Castle District. There’s a cable car that can take you to the top but there was a rather large slow moving line (spent 15 minutes and went about 3 steps forward) so we decided to walk up. You might read some reviews about the walk up being only for the fittest of fit, but that’s a load of shite, and as usual, written by 350 pound heffers who have never climbed more than 5 stairs at a time. Grobbler, who was 4 1/2 at the time, made it up most of the way and if you do the slightest bit of exercise, you should be fine. It’s a nice walk up if you take your time, I suggest that rather than lining up for an hour. Up the top are some ok views of Prague, but I reckon the view from Prague Castle is better. Forget about the house of mirrors, that’s not worth the wait and utter shite. Walking back down is nice, except when you come across a pair of abandoned jeans that somebody shat their pants in! You won’t find those in any things to do in Prague list!
After a rest back at the hotel, we headed over to Old Town Square, which was packed with tourists and not really my scene at all. As you might have noticed, basically nothing with crowds is my type of scene, unless it has something I’ve never seen before. When we went over to this side of the city, we appreciated the location we stayed in much more. I guess if you’re into people watching, drinking and socialising this is the side to be on. It’s nice, exactly what you’d expect it to be but it wasn’t as if I’d be rushing back over there in a hurry. Nice to see another part of the city though so definitely worth a visit if you’re there and another must-visit on any list of things to do in Prague.
The last day we spent walking around the city and doing a bit of exploring. I’d done a photography tour the night before (more info on that here), and revisited a few spots that I thought Grobbler might like, in particular, down by the river near the Charles Bridge, where you can feed the swans and have a nice view of the bridge, and a cool pissing statue on the way which Grobbler thought was quite amusing.
Overall, all the things we saw were pretty good, Petrin Hill wasn’t that shit hot, if you don’t have much time in Prague, give that a miss, but if you’re there for a while and looking for things to do, it’s probably worth going up if only for some exercise.
