As you probably have worked out by now, there’s not that many Nagoya attractions to visit here. If you’ve never been to Japan, Nagoya would be somewhere near the bottom of my list to visit. That is, unless you or your kids have a thing for dinosaurs, but even then, 3 hrs is a long way to drive for some fake dino’s.
From Tokyo to Nagoya, you can either fly or get a train. By bullet train, it’s about one and half to one and three quarter hours, depending on what train you take, and costs around 10,000-11,000 yen. Flying is only an hour, but by the time you get to the airport, wait for the plane and all the drama that goes along with flying these days, it’s really not worth flying. You can also take a bus, which is obviously cheapest, and slowest, taking around 5-6 hours. No thanks.
The Cherry blossoms usually come in April in Nagoya, some of the best places to see it, according to a friend who lives there, are Yamazakigawa Riverside, Inuyama Castle, Tsuruma Park, Nagoya Castle and Nagoya Peace Park, but really, you can see them in lots of other places in the city when it’s peak cherry blossom time. I guess technically you could call the cherry blossoms one the best Nagoya attractions.
I guess with the lack of Nagoya attractions, you’ll probably want to do lots of shopping and eating. Pretty much one of the main reasons we go to Japan so often is the Japanese BBQ. When you come across a good one, there’s nothing that can beat it. Japanese meat that almost melts in your mouth. Some of them are expensive, for sure, but you can find cheaper ones that will still be good. For the best shopping in Nagoya, head to Oasis 21, a huge underground complex with some good restaurants (and yes, they have Japanese BBQ). Inside Nagoya JR Station you can access, Meitetsu Department Store, and there’s a Takashimiya in there as well. Basically if you want to shop in any major Japanese city, you won’t need to venture far from the main train station of that city.
