I wouldn’t say I came back with the best Miyazaki photos, but these were some of my favourite photos of any trip, mainly black and white film. Take some Tri-X or HP5 and push it to 1600, you’ll get some nice contrasty pics of the sand as it’s got a coarse texture and dark colour. Aoshima is excellent, if you can go early morning or late evening you’ll get some awesome shots of the unique rock formations under golden hour. With kids that’s difficult so I had to make do with middle of the day, not the most flattering but I was happy with most of the shots, all on film.
I took my Leica MP with 35 Summicron V4, 3 rolls of HP5 and 5 rolls of AS Photo 400, an expired german film. At the time, I didn’t think they’d be great, but after getting them all developed, I wish I’d taken more Miyazaki photos. Was rather glad I didn’t take my X-Pro 2 and didn’t have any choice what camera to take with me each day, something that very rarely happens.
This is the ideal place to a take a new lens or new camera and do some experimentation. There’s no real need for a wide or telephoto, something like an 18-55mm (crop sensor), will be fine, the Summicron 35mm was fine and I didn’t ever wish I’d taken anything more than that. Even though there’s nothing particularly special here to photograph, this is actually one of place I want to go back to photograph more, maybe with the Hasselblad 500C/M. I don’t know why, but I liked the contrast from the black and white film I got back.
