The main part of Fukuoka city is only a few kilometers from the airport so it can take as little as 15 minutes from the airport to the city. Don’t underestimate this as it can make quite a difference in your travel and what you can and can’t do on your day of departure. If you want to stay where most of the action is (food, shopping etc), stay near Hakata station, there’s loads of shopping around here and hundreds, if not thousands of food options.
Tenjin is heart of Fukuoka city where you’ll find many department stores, fashion buildings, banks, and office buildings on Watanabe-dori Main Street. Daimyo, Imaizumi and Kego area, which are within walking distance from Tenjin, are filled with individual shops, trendy local cafes and hideaway restaurants.
Hakata Station area is the main railway terminal for the bullet trains and local trains. It’s connected to the city subway and bus terminal, and is an important access point surrounded with lots of hotels, making it easy for business and sightseeing. Hakata Station also has a tourist information counter, hundreds of restaurants and a popular shopping arcade selling various Fukuoka souvenir goods and everything else you can imagine.
The Ohori area is famous for Ohori Park, which was built using the outer moat of Fukuoka Castle. In Maizuru Park, flowers of the seasons are a favourite for both visitors and locals. The area where these two parks are is filled with Fukuoka water and greenery.
