The Hong Kong Science Museum is one of Grobblers favourite things to do in Hong Kong and is a good way to spend a morning or afternoon if the weather’s not that great. The Hong Kong Science Museum is located at 2 Science Museum Road, Tsim Sha Tsui East, Kowloon and is walkable from most hotels in TST or accessible by bus or MTR. Bus information is here as well as taxi and MTR info. It’s dirt cheap, standard tickets are only HKD$20 and you can pick up an annual pass for HKD$50 that allows for unlimited entries.
The Hong Kong Science Museum usually has a special exhibit on, currently it’s Eternal Life until 10 October 2017. This exhibition is solely sponsored by The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust. It introduces six Egyptian mummies between 3,000 and 1,800 years old. Along with the mummy displays and around 200 invaluable objects, digital interpretation of the mummies demonstrates how non-invasive CT allows archaeologists and other specialists to determine the age and gender of the mummified bodies, and to learn more about the diet, state of health, mummification process and religious practices of the ancient Egyptians. Grobbler wasn’t impressed and ripped through it in a few minutes. Check the Hong Kong Science Museum website for the latest exhibition.
Usually we go in the weekend and as soon as it opens, at 10a.m. Not many people but gets a bit busy around 11a.m. The last visit was on a Monday (non holiday) and there about 5 busloads of school kids trying to get in. Crowded but they hung out in the special exhibition hall most of the time and the main areas were pretty empty.
Lot of things to do at the Hong Kong Science Museum, the main hall has a big dinosaur along with some stuffed animals, butterflies, stuff about the body and some other interesting things. You can probably spend half an hour to an hour just in that depending on how interested your kids are. There’s a Liquid Nitrogen show/demonstration at times throughout the day (first one at 10:30a.m) but that’s not that crash hot. Basically the underground exhibition hall has the following: Biodiversity Showroom, Jockey Club Green Gallery, life sciences, Optics, mathematics, Mechanics, Mirror world (closed).
After that head upstairs to the 1st floor which has the Magnetic gallery, Occupational Safety and Health Exhibition Gallery, Corner Gallery and acoustics, and basically a lot of tables for doing some puzzles. The 2nd floor is food science, Home technology, Telecommunications gallery, traffic and a massive big plane hanging from the roof. It’s all quite good with plenty of things to do for kids of all ages and you could probably spend 2-3 hours there.
Worst about the Hong Kong Science Museum is the fun police are active on high alert mode. As is the case with most places in Hong Kong that are meant to be fun, the HK Government has done their very best to make sure not too much fun is had. The fun police stand around thinking they are on the lookout for ISIS and if you even look at a place you’re not supposed to go, you’ll get a slap on the wrist. No big deal I guess but I don’t much (any) patience for the fun police, who seem think their job is to stop people having any fun, and that applies to anywhere run by the HK Government.
The Hong Kong Science Museum is right opposite the Hong Kong Museum of History, which we’ve also been to but that’s not really suitable for younger kids as they’ll get a bit bored. Still, the Hong Kong Science Museum is worth a visit, whether you’re a tourist or expat living in Hong Kong. Buy the annual pass, I think we’ve been there about 4 or 5 times now so well worth the measly $50 for the annual pass.
When you’re done, walk back to TST about 5 minutes and you’re right in the thick of things.
