For double the price of Fuji Industrial 400 or Agfa Vista 400, you better really like Fuji Pro 400H film. It’s labelled as a Professional grade film and is priced as such and if you’re a Pro, or accomplished amateur photography, yes, you will notice the difference and probably get more out of this film than the vast majority of hacks like myself.
I (stupidly) used this when I first started shooting film again and didn’t really have a clue what I was doing (not much has changed). Looking back on them now, while they’re not great photos, I can definitely tell a difference between Fuji Pro 400H and something like Agfa Vista 400 or a Kodak Gold or even a Fuji Superia. The colours are real, sharpness is great and there’s bugger all grain for a 400 speed film.
Fuji Pro 400H is an ideal film for portraits, wedding, fashion and that type of thing. Fuji also claim it’s got a 3D look and I wouldn’t disagree with that. If money is not an issue, then you can’t go wrong with this film, but for enthusiasts and the normal person (non-professional), other cheaper films will work just as well. If you’ve got something important to photograph, like a special birthday, holiday or occasion, then it’s worth spending the extra if you plan to make large prints.
You can buy Fuji Pro 400H almost anywhere, it’s no cheaper in Japan than in Hong Kong and hopefully it won’t be disappearing like all the other Fuji films. Here’s a link to the data sheet which contains full specifications and all the glorious marketing speak. See below for some samples taken a while back, might have to go out and buy myself a few more packs to get some respectable ones to show.
