Fuji Acros 100 Black and White Film

Thank god Fuji's Acros 100 is not (yet) on the chopping board because it's one of my favourite black an white films to shoot with.

Fuji Acros 100 is Fujfilm’s last black and white film and it’s probably only a matter of time before it joins the others on Fujifilm’s scrap pile. For a long time I didn’t shoot this film because when you’re trying to photograph a 4 or 5 year old who thinks it’s hilarious to run around as fast he can while you’re trying to take photos of him, you really need something a bit faster than 100 ISO, especially in the conditions you get in Hong Kong (Hint: It’s grey, raining and about 200m visibility).

This changed a little bit when I saw what Ted Viera was doing with Fuji Acros 100.  He started pushing it 400 and the images he was getting were just beautiful, and I don’t mean the ones with some of his models. No, shooting at night, pushing Fuji Acros 100 to 400, the results are stunning.  I’ve tried it and failed most of the time because I’m a shit photographer, but even so I’ve got some stuff that I liked and you don’t need to be wide open so much when you’re at at 400.

Anyway, check out Ted’s website here. He doesn’t always shoot with Fuji Acros 100 but if you like Black and White Photography, he’s well worth a visit.  He also has an excellent YouTube Channel (check that out here) and is one of the least humble people posting about photography.

Of course, you don’t need to push Acros 100 to achieve some great photos. When I have time (i.e my kid isn’t with me), I’ll shoot it at box speed and come away with some extremely sharp, fine grained images.  The negatives tend to scan well too. I don’t know why this is but certain negatives tend to scan better than others. Or is it because of the scanner itself?  If you know, let me know.
