Stayed at the Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan for one night during our Borneo Tour. You can read more about why not to come here but a lot of tours start or end here so if you’re doing a tour in Borneo, it’s quite likely you’re going to have to pick a hotel in Sandakan, and this one is okay. It’s nearby the water and whilst we only arrived at 7p.m and had to leave at 8, it appears in a good location with lots happening around it.
Checking in was okay, average time of about 5-10 minutes. Room is okay, average size, but stunk of some sort of fruit. After staying at Borneo Rainforest Lodge anything was going to be a major downgrade but still, the Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan is fine for one, two or perhaps even more nights, depending on what you’re doing on your tour. There’s a mall adjoining which you can get to from Level 1 of the hotel. Not very big or great, but has a McDonalds, couple of other restaurants and some other shops that didn’t look that great, although for Sandakan, it’s probably their best one.
Rooms at Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan are fine, smallish bathroom but has a good shower with stable water temperature. Bed is really comfy, some shelves were falling apart a bit and there were some dead insects on the floor so cleaning leaves a little bit to be desired. Not filthy, but not that clean. There’s a couple of restaurants inside the hotel but we didn’t try them, couldn’t imagine anything being that great in Sandakan and like most hotels, probably would have ended up paying twice or three times as much for something not that great.
Our booking didn’t include breakfast and we probably should have paid for it on arrival which costs less, but thought there might be some nearby cafe’s breakfast places (turns out there’s not, at least that I found), so we just ate breakfast at the hotel restaurant. Pretty much what you expect a Four Points in Sabah to be like (pretty ordinary) and okay enough to get you going in the morning.
If you’re staying in Sandakan at any time during your Borneo Tour, this is fine,it’s not like you’re going to be lounging around on the pool getting massages and sipping cocktails all day so for a night or short stay the Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan is absolutely fine.
