No trip to the USA should leave out Washington DC. I visited here in my early twenties and despite being a complete little tosser (nothing has changed!), I found it really fascinating. Yes, there’s more to Washington DC than just the iconic landmarks and monuments such as the White House, Lincoln Memorial and Washington Monument, but really, this is why you come and none of them are to be missed.
Times have changed though, and you don’t really stand outside the White House in awe of the man inside and the men who came before him. No, it’s all become a bit of a circus and I’m afraid the most powerful man in the world has helped turn politics into something of a horrible TV reality show gone wrong. But that’s about as much you’ll hear me say on politics.
Washington DC might not be the most exciting or adventuresome city but it’s a must visit and being only about 360km from New York City, it’s about a 4 hrs by car or trains and buses run frequently between the two, you should include it if you’re in New York. This is a grown up city in every way and if you like to learn about history, you could easily spend a week here doing the guided tours at all the monuments.
If you are one of those people above, your kids are probably going to get rather bored so as usual we’ve complied a list of things to do in Washington DC with kids so they can have their time. Find out more information about that in Toucan’s Tips For Kids. If you’re an American, it’d be almost a sin not to bring your kids here to learn at least a little bit about the nations capital.
