Niagara Falls, USA and Canada

Almost one of those things you have to once in your life and definitely worth a visit if you're doing a road trip around the USA.

Niagara Falls is pretty spectacular but I’m not sure I’d travel long distances to see it.  If you’re around that area, say in New York State, Cleveland, Toronto or Detroit, then they’re definitely worth visiting but they’re not something I’d travel half way around the world to go and see specifically.

Coming from New Zealand, we have the Huka falls, which is quite impressive but nothing really compared to the Niagara Falls.  Living in Asia for over 20 years, most Asian’s get rather excited about running tap water and people will walk for miles and be impressed at a a trickle over a few rocks on a mountain.  So I can see for them, the Niagara Falls would be rather mind blowing.  When you stand near the falls where the water starts to fall down, it’s really quite scary and I must admit it’s pretty impressive seeing the power and strength of the water go over.

I’m glad I went but again, it’s probably not something or somewhere you’d travel long haul for, but doing it as part of a trip around the USA would be well worth it.  It’s not somewhere you’d go back to again and again, unless you lived in the area, but I would recommend seeing it once in your life as it’s pretty impressive.

Niagara Falls is actually a town and the name given to three waterfalls on the border of Canada and the USA. Over 3,000 tons of water flows over the Niagara Falls every second.  They’re capable of producing over 4 million kilowatts of electricity which is shared by Canada and the USA.  Four of the five Great Lakes lead into the Niagara River before emptying into Lake Ontario, and amazingly these five Great Lakes account for almost 1/5th of the world’s fresh water supply.
