Vienna is one of those cities that didn’t quite live up to expectations. It’s beautiful, nice, clean, orderly and has some lovely architecture and buildings but it was a bit like going out on a date and getting to third base (pretty typical for me when I was younger!) – quite satisfying but it would have been nice to get a little more. By no means is it disappointing, I could imagine living there would be alright, loads of parks, open spaces, good shopping, and high standard of living, but it doesn’t have much heart or soul, in my opinion. The typical tourist attractions, landmarks and things to do, are all pretty good and for the most part well worth seeing. I didn’t do much (any) shopping in Vienna, but my Mum (who is the undisputed world champion of shopping) said it was pretty good so I (and you should) take her word for that.
I’d go back to Vienna at some stage but not in a hurry. Perhaps the problem is it’s not really a kids city, I’d say it’s more for grown ups and whilst you can take kids there no problem, there’s not a whole for them to do other than tag along and the usual zoo and aquarium, which are both quite good and talked about more in Toucan’s Tips for Tips. We spent 3 nights in Vienna, enough to see most of the top things to do and places to visit, but probably not enough to get a real good taste of the city. After 3 days I must admit I wasn’t that sad to leave and don’t think I’d have wanted to have stayed much longer.
