Yokohama doesn’t get anywhere near the attention of Tokyo but if you’ve been to Tokyo a few times or even once and want to see somewhere different, Yokohama is definitely worth the short trip over. Just get the train (about 20 minutes) and you’re there. It’s much less busy than Tokyo but you can still get all the good shopping, food, parks and Japanese hospitality. It’s been a few years since we’ve been and as I write this I’m planning another trip here to check it out a second time.
For sure, it doesn’t have the same buzz and excitement as Tokyo does, but it’s still a nice city to visit. However, you don’t really go here for anything in particular. It’s probably not worth staying here for more than a few days, but would also be a good day trip over night trip from Tokyo if you had the time. It’s not my favourite city in Japan and probably isn’t in the top 3 or even 5, but I’d gladly go there again and if you’re planning a visit, you’ll enjoy it.
Yokohama is located right in the centre of Japan, along the coastline of Japan’s Pacific Ocean, and one of the 15 Japanese Government-designated cities. The population is 3.7 million which makes it the second largest after Tokyo. A number of foreign companies have established their branches here as the Yokohama Port is a major international trading port.
Yokohama has quite a mild climate. The average temperature in Yokohama is 16 degrees with pleasant weather in spring and autumn, high temperature and high humidity in summer. It can get cold in winter but rarely snows. Basically you can visit year round, there’s little pollution and the air is generally clean.
