Langkawi, Malaysia

A bit like the rest of Malaysia - underwhelming and not a place I'd ever think about going back to.

This is going to be short because there’s very little to do in Langkawi other than laze around the pool and the beach.  We stayed at The Danna Langkawi, which was nice but nothing to get excited about. See more about our stay at the Danna here. Granted, Grobbler was only 2 when we stayed here so there’s a limited amount of things you can do, but for some reason we left underwhelmed and with absolutely no desire to come back.

The Langkawi beach was pretty ordinary, not bad but nothing special and we’ve been to many better beaches around Asia.  It’s not somewhere you can get to easily from any place, probably the only reason we ended up here was we were in Singapore and it’s a short Silk Air flight from there to Langkawi, otherwise not many direct flights apart from regular ones from Kuala Lumpur.

Langkawi actually consists of over 100 islands with Langkawi Island the biggest. It’s been listed as a UNESCO Global Geopark. The main city is Kuah, we didn’t make it there as it’s a way from the hotel and not really anything of note to visit it for anyway. As a beach destination holiday from Hong Kong, not sure why anybody would go there. With no direct flights from Hong Kong or in fact most major Asian cities, it’s a pain to get to. There’s a couple of nice hotels here, The Danna, which we stayed in, as well as the Datai, Four Seasons, The St Regis and The Andaman, and Luxury Collection hotel.  There’s also a Westin and bunch of other cheaper ones, so perhaps we just stayed at the wrong hotel and wrong beach.

The Danna Langkawi

We stayed in something poxy called the Duchess Suite at The Danna Langkawi. Cost was USD$4,950 for 5 nights booked through an agent, which was a bit outrageous and completely overpriced considering the location.  The hotel is not that big and the building is a bit box looking from the front but up close it’s more of a colonial style …
