Bhutan

Bhutan would have to be in my top 3 of favourite places I've been and can't wait to go back for a longer stay

Bhutan is probably one of my favourite places I’ve visited anywhere in the world.  Sure, it’s a bit of pain to get to but once you’re there you’re in for something special.  If you want to get away from it all and are sick of the typical beach destination, Bhutan should be on the top of your list.  It’s one of the few places I’ve been to that remains relatively untouched and despite the increasing amount of tourists, it’s relatively devoid of tourist traps, tacky tourist attractions and well, anything negative associated with tourism.  The place, and the people and the culture are special and there’s not a lot places that remain as natural and unaffected by tourism as this.

I went during the end of the so called “low season” in June and barely saw another tourist there.  Apparently it can get quite busy in high season so if you can, visit on the fringes, you might have a bit of rain, but I’d rather have rain for an hour a day then deal with hoards of tourists. Bhutan is not that easy to get to and usually requires a connecting flight but it’s worth the effort and there’s a lot of things to do and see to make it all worthwhile.

Bhutan

Most people who visit Bhutan go for the trekking but even if, like me, you don’t have the time to spend a few weeks there going into the remote regions, you can still see and do an awful lot in 3 days.  It’s worth going to Bhutan just to see the Tigers Nest (or Paro Taktsang) and nothing else, so make sure to include that on any itinerary into Bhutan.

You need a guide and permit to travel to Bhutan, you can find out all about that in our Bhutan destination pages below or check out the Tourism Council of Bhutan’s website here.

Zhiwa Ling Hotel Bhutan

I stayed 3 nights at the Zhiwa Ling Hotel and this is really something different from your usual 5 star resort, and in a good way. …

Ethnotel Kolkata

Stayed at the Ethnotel Kolkata during a stopover for 5 hrs at 1am in the morning. It’s close to the airport (about a 10 minute drive), rooms are reasonably clean but I didn’t get much (any) sleep due to the fact there was a sound reminiscent of a helicopter going the whole night. I presume this was the venting/fan system. I …
