10 years in Bangkok was enough for me and by the end I couldn’t wait to leave. However, as a tourist destination, Bangkok and Thailand are still probably one of the best places to go regardless of where you live in the world. From pretty much anywhere in Asia, it’s a shortish flight, and it’s the gateway to all of Thailand’s best beaches and other places worth visiting.
Bangkok’s got some of the best hotels in the world and they keep going up. Even if there’s major international conferences or events on, you’re not going to find it difficult to get a hotel room. They’re also cheap and unless you want to stay in one of the major luxury brands, you can pay a fraction of the price.
The food is excellent, eat off the street if you’re brave or go for upscale at one of thousands of restaurants around the city. I don’t know anybody who doesn’t like Thai food and your best bet is to go local, the places that cater to tourists don’t taste anything like real Thai food.
The service is incredible. Regardless of the price of your hotel, at most places you’ll encounter a smile and a genuine welcome that you don’t find may other places in the world. The Thai’s love kids and if you visit Bangkok with your family, everywhere you go you’ll have the locals swooning over your kids. Unless they’re little b#stards, in which case they won’t be so enamoured.
There’s plenty to do in Bangkok for everyone, the shopping is good and overall there’s very few negatives, traffic being the worst of them. It can get hot for sure but it’s not as humid as say Singapore or Hong Kong and even during the rainy season, most of the time you’l get a torrential downpour for an hour or two in the afternoon so if you plan accordingly you can still get a lot done.
