Got a Bangkok to Hong Kong Cathay Pacific Economy Class ticket on Asia Miles, but had to use 35,000 miles which is way over the 20,000 miles usually required. That pretty sums up the Marco Polo Club program and the uselessness of Asia Miles – it’s pretty much impossible to use Asia Miles to redeem flight these days.
Anyway, Bangkok to Hong Kong Cathay Pacific Economy Class started off with me getting applause from a bunch of Thai’s because I told one mainland Chinese guy to get in line and reminded him this wasn’t China while getting into the boarding gate. Honestly, the extra 10 seconds didn’t bother me but there’s a clear line, people are lining up, then this chump just decides he’ll overtake everyone and go to the middle of the line. After I told him he had to wait, a bunch of Thai’s broke into applause and said thanks.
The slapper grumpily motioned for me to go in front, which I did, then because I had checked in online and got a mobile boarding pass, held him up for a few minutes while the ground crew figured something out! Anyway, loads of mainland Chinese on this Bangkok to Hong Kong Cathay Pacific Economy Class so knew was in for a bit of an adventure. Seats are ok, it’s a 3-3-3 configuration which I don’t like and the seats which don’t recline, well only the front bits recline so you don’t disturb the people in front.
I reckon this is a good idea for short haul flights as it avoids any possible air rage for people reclining, but that’s a whole other story! The flight was full, the group of mainlanders were literally yelling and screaming at each from the opposite sides of the plane from the moment we got on, until about 30 minutes after take off, which was about an hour in all. Thankfully I had an empty seat next to me, stuck my noise cancelling earphones on to avoid the worst of it, but apparently a group of mainland Chinese are louder than jet engines.
Food was your typical, had a choice of chicken or pork on rice, I chose the chicken and pretty much as expected At least on Bangkok to Hong Kong Cathay Pacific Economy Class they give you some decent fruit, some ice cream so not all bad. It’s only a two and a bit hour flight so no big deal. About half way through the Bangkok to Hong Kong Cathay Pacific Economy Class flight, we had 3 announcements that there was no smoking anywhere on board so presume that was one of the mainlanders lighting up somewhere. This was confirmed by the police waiting at the door when we got off.
As usual, and this isn’t limited to mainland Chinese, you had a whole lot of people getting up immediately after take off and more quite literally as soon as the wheels had touched down. This wasn’t like a few meters from the gate when the plane is slowing down, but 3 seconds after the wheels have touched down and the plane’s still going at some rate of speed. Absolutely no idea! Announcement came over in Mandarin telling people to sit down but they were oblivious and just went about their business!
Service on Bangkok to Hong Kong Cathay Pacific Economy Class was fine, nothing spectacular, your usual Cathay service which is alright and normally nothing to complain about. Oh, at the departure gate they’ve got a reserved area for Business, Platinum, Diamond and Gold members which is good. I’m no longer a gold and have been downgraded to pleb status, but still have my old card and because I had a mobile boarding pass, nobody was none the wiser.
When I don’t have a carry on and just a back pack, which is most of the time, I’ll usually try and wait to the very last minute to get on, but I had a carry-on this time and you need to make sure you get overhead space for that so used my little trick to get on first while the others argued about who’s using what overhead space! Didn’t watch any movies on Bangkok to Hong Kong Cathay Pacific Economy Class, flight its too short, and the tv’s were small and shitty and anyway, I always download shit on my Chromebook in case the TV’s don’t work. Did a bit of work anyway amongst the chaos of the mainland Chinese group who thought this was there private charter.
Now I understand these cats have never flown before. It’s not really their fault, the tour group leader should be making them aware of the rules but the tour leader herself was up and out of her seat and had to be told 4 times to sit down so it’s the blind leading the blind.
Anyway, overall Bangkok to Hong Kong Cathay Pacific Economy Class is fine, not worth paying the full economy class fare for, but there’s deals around so you should be able to get it for a few thousand Hong Kong. Ordinarily I wouldn’t have paid so many miles for this but I had 25,000 expiring so really only wasted 10,000 which in the overall scheme of things wasn’t too bad. Still, you can pay 40,000 and fly business, but for that length it’s hardly worth it.
