If you’re looking for something a bit different, the Azur Lodge in Queenstown is just the ticket and one of the better places we’ve stayed at anywhere. It’s got just 9 Villas, each 79 sqm and with awesome views down on the lake and into the remarkables ski range. Arrived here with a rare crying Grobbler and the staff met us outside and just let us go to the room without checking in to get things under control so that was a good start.
The rooms are nice at the Azur Lodge, quite new (we were there in late 2013) and the open plan design is excellent. Bed very comfy and in one area, then another areas has the living room. The bathroom is a good size and has a wicked bath tub that you can sit in while admiring the view. Basically you can get the view from every part of the villa. There’s a large balcony with chairs and table that you’ll probably spend loads of time sitting out on if the weather’s good.
We only spent a few nights at Azur Lodge as it was just a wee break after spending a week in Wanaka and before driving back to Christchurch. I’d have been happy spending 7 days here, or living here would be alright too. That view is something you’d never get sick of. You can go up and have drinks with the staff/owners and that type of thing but with baby that’s a bit difficult. We’re anti-social anyway and not really into that type of thing.
Breakfast was good, good old kiwi stuff and just the basics like toast, bacon and eggs and the likes. Perfectly okay but if you’re really into your massive 234 item selection buffet, then you might not be too happy. I’m not a breakfast person so just right for me. There’s a complimentary afternoon tea and evening canapes that we didn’t indulge in as it would have required talking to strangers! For dinner you can order from one of the restaurants in the town and they’ll deliver it to you.
Doesn’t get much better than this in New Zealand and I’d strongly recommend Azure Lodge over staying in the town but you really need a car or rental car as it’s not close to anything. About 10-15 minutes drive from the town. The staff are excellent and there’s really nothing negative to say.
