Agfa Scala 200X was the only black and white slide film in the world and had razor sharpness, extremely fine grain and just a beautiful clean smooth look. Last year (in 2016) I managed to get my hands on 2 boxes at the excellent OutPut Pro Lab film shop in Mongkok (don’t bother asking them for more, I took their last stock!). Getting your hands on Agfa Scala 200X is one thing, processing it is another.
I had to send this film to the USA, dr5 Lab, who are, as far as I know, the only ones who can process Agfa Scala 200X. It was quite an effort, expensive and time consuming, but worth it. There is just some awesome, awesome prints I’ve got back and some of them will never be shared. dr5 also make slides out of HP5, a unique process that very film labs in the world do. The results from that though were scratchy at best, it was like the negatives had been screwed up then flattened out. Maybe some people would it but definitely not for me.
Can’t remember what the total cost but it wasn’t cheap. Worth it for Agfa Scala 200X but definitely not to turn HP5 into slides. Anyway, dr5 are the only guys in the world who “make” black and white slides from most negatives. I don’t know how they do it, but check out their website for the details. They’re based in the U.S, took them about 2-3 months to do so not that quick.
Here’s a few samples images shot with Agfa Scala 200X with the Leica M6 and 35 Summicron V3. I wish I had known more about light and photography when I shot with this film.
