Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo is one of my favourite places to visit and it's almost unbeatable for kids, especially babies, toddlers and younger ones

I think I’ve been to Tokyo around ten staying in Shinjuku, Roppongi, Midtown, Daiba, Ginza and Shinbashi, amongst a few others.  What makes Tokyo so special?  Excellent food, politeness of the people, shopping, parks, fresh air, and loads of different things to do for every type of person.  The language can be an issue, but I’ve never to encountered a situation where it caused any major inconvenience so I wouldn’t worry about too much. If you want to shop, stay in Shinjuku, if you want to spend a lot of money shopping and like to dress up, stay in Ginza and if you want to be away from the action, stay in Daiba.  It doesn’t really matter which area of Tokyo you stay in, you’re unlikely to be far from something good and the underground train system pretty much takes you to anywhere in greater Tokyo.

Tokyo Japan

If you’ve never been to Japan, start in Tokyo and spend at least 4-5 days, which will give you a good experience and let you see most of the best things there.  I could quite easily live in Tokyo but I can see the absolute strictness and rules becoming quite tiresome after a while. For a holiday, it’s a godsend for almost everything.  There’s so many great areas of Tokyo that cater to different tastes and desires so whatever you’re into, Tokyo is likely to have something for you.  Make sure you check out Shimokitazawa for something a bit different.

Tokyo

Since I first went there about 5 years ago, there’s a huge difference in the ease of getting around in terms of signage in English and even the amount of English spoken.  With the Rugby World Cup coming in 2019, it’s only going to get better. There’s regular flights from Hong Kong on multiple airlines and of course almost every major airline flies into Tokyo so it’s not difficult to get to.  It’s well connected to other areas by Bullet Trains and the subway and public trains are now easy to use.

Tokyo For Kids

Despite going there at least twice a year for the last 5 or so years, I never get bored of Tokyo and it’s one of my favourite destinations anywhere in the world.  If it was as close as Bangkok, I’d be there every other month.  The hotels and accommodation isn’t that cheap, but most other things are very reasonably priced.  The people are lovely and probably the best dressed and most polite anywhere I’ve been to.

Shimokitazawa Tokyo

With a kid it’s not that often I head out to places like Shimokitazawa, which is one of Tokyo’s lesser known places but well worth the visit if you’ve covered a lot of Tokyo and/or been and done that with the more popular parts like Shinjuku, Ginza, Shibuya or Harajuku. To get to Shimokitazawa from Shinjuku, get on the Odakyu …

Hakkeijima Sea Paradise

Just visited Hakkeijima Sea Paradise for the second time on a recent visit to Tokyo and apart from spending the day freezing my ass off, was pretty good. If you’ve read any other destination guide on this site you’ll know Grobbler has been to what seems like a record number of aquariums in Asia so this wasn’t anything too special …

If you’re looking for the best AirBnB in Shinjuku, this probably isn’t it, but the location is fantastic in a quiet neighbourhood and 5-10 minute walk to the best shopping in Shinjuku and Shinjuku Station. Read on for the dull review or just have a look at it now – link here. First up, the rates are between HKD$500 and …

Keio Plaza Hotel Tokyo

Keio Plaza Hotel Tokyo was the first hotel I stayed at on my first visit to Tokyo about 6 years ago. It’s perfectly fine but for some reason reminded me of a shitty Hilton.  The rooms were a bit old but clean enough and perfectly acceptable unless you plan on spending most of your time in the room. Keio Plaza …

The Peninsula Tokyo

The Peninsula Tokyo is located in possibly the best place in Ginza, a few minutes from the shopping, restaurants and opposite Hibiya Park and the Imperial Palace.  For sure, it’s a nice hotel and everything you’d expect from a Peninsula but like a lot of Peninsula and Oriental Mandarin properties, it’s a little bit stuffy and toffee nose for my liking. …

The Ritz-Carlton Tokyo

The Ritz Carlton Tokyo Rooms are big for Japan standards, nice view overlooking Tokyo Tower, and apparently they also have rooms that have views of Mt Fuji or the Imperial Palace.  Honestly I don’t remember much about the Ritz Carlton Tokyo which is probably not a great sign, I remember more about the area, which whilst good, isn’t my favourite area …
